Quilt - Calico, Bandana Binding, Felt and Embroidery Thread, 67.5cm x 28.5cm

The cream square patchworks used on the background, I made back in January 2022 which were my first attempts at patch working. I bought some neutral fabric charm packs (pack of squares of pre-cut fabrics in different colour palettes, a great option for beginners so you dont have to make lots of decisions about colours). I literally just practiced attaching squares to each other to familiarise myself with the sewing machine (which I was pretty scared of). Once I had an assortment of patchwork I found the felt motifs I had made in August 2021 relating to the Climate crisis caused by capitalism and extreme greed and decided to stitch them together.

On the back of the bigger quilt I have used red, orange and yellow tie dye patch worked together to create a fire like textile with black and red binding around the edge.

For this Diptych (pair of artworks) i wanted to use colour variation thread for the quilting stitches. On the larger piece the thread reflects the multicoloured backing, from the bottom the quilting stitches are shades of yellow, moving to the centre of the piece the stitches are shades of orange which blends to the top of which is shades of red colour variation thread. I chose diagonal stitches about 2cm between each line. Once I had decided on this, I actually found it pretty therapeutic to do this simple lines of stitches one after the other.
