RIOTGALS, 2017

hand embroidery of circular wreath with 5 portraits of Black and Brown women. Heels, trainers, dr martens, underwear, jewellery, nail polish, pencils, roses, stars, hearts, microphone and music notes

Hand embroidery on calico, 20cm x 20cm

I made this artwork inspired by some women I admired for their social media presence and what they represent. Being your authentic self. The exhibition it was made for was curated by Sophia Tassew in collaboration with ASOS, so I included different personal styles from heels, dr martens to trainers.

Photo of two people smiling in front of a wall of art with pink and red lighting.
RIOT! RIOT! RIOT!
WE’RE NOT KILLING INDUSTRIES, WE’RE REINVENTING THEM.
WE’RE NOT ENTITLED, WE RIGHTFULLY HAVE STANDARDS.
WE’RE NOT OVERSENSITIVE, WE’RE BEING THE CHANGE WE WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.
WE ARE GIFTED. ARTISTIC. SMART. AWARE. MORE CONSCIOUS THAN EVER. WE RIOT THROUGH DIFFERENT MEANS.
THIS EXHIBITION EXPLORES THE TOPICS YOUR PARENTS DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT.
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO RIOT.
