Memorial For Un-Housed People, 2023

Hand Embroidery and Felt on Cotton Bandana and Calico Patchwork, 15cm x 15cm.

The Museum of Homelessness released data from their investigations into the deaths of people experiencing homelessness in the UK that showed 1313 had died prematurely in 2022. The UK is in the top ten biggest economies in the world, more billionaires than ever and the capitalist system exists to keep a very few people rich while the many suffer. Homeless people are criminalised and treated so inhumanely while they are some of the most marginalised and vulnerable people, many being disabled. There was a vigil outside Downing Street to commemorate these lives tragically lost. The MOH said if you cant make it you can post a candle and hashtag #MakeThemCount which is why I wanted to make this small memorial. Its a travesty and disgraceful injustice that people can die while un-housed in the 6th biggest economy in the world. It is cruel and greedy and heartless, all people should have access to safe housing as a human right. Quilts and many textiles are associated with home and domesticity, warmth and comfort, so I put the felt and embroidered flame on a small patchwork square instead of just a plain background.
