Moments of Bliss, 2023

quilt, patchwork background is made of thin strips of black and white bandanas with skulls and paisley designs all over. A self portrait of me with a purple fringe, silver eyebrow piercing and content smile, wearing a black puffer jacket, cross legge

Quilt - Bandana, Printed Felt, Glass Beads and Embroidery Thread, 50cm x 53cm.

I drew this design inspired by my new puffer coat which feels like a duvet, and the moments when Im sitting in the garden and the sun shines directly on me while I smoke a spliff with a cup of tea and listen to the birds singing and flying overhead. Moments of Bliss perfectly encapsulate that warm fuzzy feeling. I feel grateful for these moments of respite from the stresses of the world and chronic pain. I wanted to use off cuts of the black and white patchwork bandana from Down The Drain piece not just because recycling is what patchwork is all about, but also because it aesthetically represents the chaos and mess and stress of the outside world. I drew the figure on my ipad and then printed it onto felt, but it was missing something and suddenly I had to put two green parakeets flying in it to balance some of the negative space around the sun. I get such a cozy and content feeling from this piece and the beadwork details add movement and sparkle to this piece about reflection and appreciation.
