Espolon: Pompeii, 2016

hand embroidery of an erupting volcano with yellow, orange and red lava, big smoke cloud covered with preserved people, vases fish, coins, shells and bread. Ruins of buildings below.

Hand embroidery on calico, 30cm x 46cm

In 2016 Espolon commissioned me to make four more artwork, 3 of which had the same theme as their 2015 commissions (Technology, Equality and Death), with the addition of one inspired by a historic event (I chose Pompeii).

After being inspired by a documentary I had recently watched, which went into detail about how human life was basically frozen in time due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Bread was preserved in bakeries, evidence of Pompeii being a fishing port such as fishing nets, coins and ceramics and other everyday objects as well as humans stuck in time. I captured these moments in an abstracted image of an exploding volcano, small ruins of the town below and stylised objects in the smoke cloud above.

A moment in time captured forever.Encased in volcanic ash and pumice of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Pompeli became a town destroyed and yet preserved by this natural disaster. People were unaware of what the future held for them.
